Welcome to the website of Alex Hughes Cartoons and Caricatures. I'm a cartoonist and caricaturist from Birmingham in the UK. Scattered across these pages are examples of my work, published and unpublished, from political cartoons to personal caricatures, comic strips to magazine illustrations. Please feel free to have a good look around. My services are available for personal caricatures, on-the-spot caricature or any other cartoon, caricature or illustation work, and many of the cartoons on the site are available for sale. On this page I'll keep you up to date with news and developments, and elsewhere in this section there's a site map, the all-important frequently asked questions list, and a page of useful links.

If you're interested, or you'd just like to comment on the site, please get in touch here or e-mail me direct at alex.hughes@alexhughescartoons.co.uk.

Local News - New Street Station (again...)

Another local story - this week it was announced that New Street Station was to (finally) get the funding from central government to go ahead with it's redevelopment. Sadly, the scheme, whilst delivering a shiny new station with more space for passengers, won't add any more room for the already over-capacity rail network using the station.

Local News - Longbridge Inquiry

Still no end in sight for the inquiry into the collapse of Rover, which has now been running for over two and a half years, at a cost of £11 million (with £100,000 on hotels alone).

Local News - Single Status

This week's Birmingham-themed cartoon comes from the impending strike about the Single Status agreement, which has radically reshaped the pay structure for Birmingham City Council employees with some staff receiving significant pay rises, but others (the bin-men included) being forced to take cuts of up to £20,000.

Local News - Consultants cost Birmingham City Council £20 million.

Another cartoon for my local news project, this week following the story in today's Birmingham Post that Birmingham City Council has paid consultants Capita £20 million in fees to, er, cut costs in the city.

Local news - Birmingham Opera Company

This week the Arts Council announced plans to cut funding to a number of large arts bodies, including the Birmingham Opera Company, which now faces closure as a result.

In other news - following the completion of my Card-i-catures project last year, this year I've decided to think locally, and produce a cartoon a week on the subject of issues local to me here in Birmingham. As always, I welcome your comments!
