Card-i-cature a week... Weeks 48-52 (and the Joker)

Well, looks like I've come to the end of my project, so here, in reverse order, are the last 6 cards...

The Joker - George W Bush (and Dick Cheney)
Well, although I couldn't find a specific week-on-week story to tie Dubya to, he's cast his shadow over the whole year with the on-going wars on Terror, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The King of Spades - Jacob Zuma - 28 December
South African Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, was appointed President of the African National Congress, effectively ensuring him as a shoe-in for the Presidency next year, despite the on-gooing controversies in his personal life, from financial irregularities to his recently acquitted rape trial, where he admitted that his defence against AIDS was, er, to have a shower afterwards.

The Ace of Diamonds - Shane MacGowan - 21 December
Former Pogues frontman and raging alcoholic Shane MacGowan was back in the news this week with the re-issue of 'best Christmas song ever' Fairytale of New York (with the late Kirsty McColl) was censored by BBC Radio One, removing the words faggot and slut.

The Jack of Diamonds - Fabio Capello - 14 December
Newly-appointed England manager Fabio Capello makes the card this week, having promised to learn English within the month.

Queen of Diamonds - Chrisopher Biggins - 7 December
King of the Jungle is my Queen of Diamonds, having won TV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here with it's Bush Tucker Trials which invariably involved eating unpleasant animal parts.

The King of Clubs - David Abrahams - 30 November
Apparently publicity-shy businessman David Abrahams was trust into the limelight this week when it was revealed he was making substantial donations to the Labour party through intermediaries, conveniently side-stepping party-funding regulations and bringing the sleaze spotlight onto Labour party fundraising.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 47 - Alastair Darling (the Ace of Hearts)

Hello Darling! This weeks card is the beleaguered Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alastair Darling, who this week was twice forced to apologise to Parliament, firstly for the Northern Rock fiasco, then the news that two computer discs containing the entire contents of the 25 million names on the Child Benefits database, representing every school-age child in the UK, had been lost in the post...

Card-i-cature a week... Week 46 - Prince (10 of Diamonds)

Risking the censure of the small purple one, week 46 is the turn of the Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, Prince, who this week started a campaign to rid the internet of any unauthorised images of himself, and anything else that vaguely refers to himself...

Card-i-cature a week... Week 45 - General Pervez Musharraf (the Eight of Spades)

Week 45 - and General Pervez Musharraf, who siezed power in a military coup in Pakistan in 1999, but yet is still an ally in the War on Terror, was in the news this week for declaring emergency rule in Pakistan, imposing a State of Emergency, suspending the Constitution, firing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, postponing next years presidential elections and putting rival and former president Benazir Bhutto under house arrest.

Edit (27 Dec 2007): Small change as I realised I'd included two Ace of Spades, and no Eight. Remedied now.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 44 - Sir Ian Blair (the Ace of Clubs)

Week 44, and this week Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Sir Ian Blair faced calls to resign following the Met being found guilty of breaking Health and Safety laws (?) when anti-terrorist officers shot dead Charles de Menezes in 2005 at Stockwell Green tube station, believing him (wrongly) to be a suicide bomber.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 43 - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (The Two of Spades)

Week 43, and for the Two of Spades it's King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who this week was preparing to visit the UK for the first visit of a Saudi monarch in 20 years. The visit was contraversial for a number of reasons, from Saudi Arabia's disregard for human rights and use of capital punishment, the recent (conveniently dropped) enquiry into British Aerospace's and the
Government's dealing with the country, and the King's comments on the 7/7 London bombers.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 42 - Jonny Wilkinson (The Ten of Clubs)

Week 42, and England rugby star Jonny Wilkinson is in the news for saving Englands bacon last week and propelling the national side into the World Cup Finals in Paris...

Card-i-cature a week... Week 41 - Al Gore (The Four of Spades)

Week 41 - and this week it's former US Vice President and technically-president (if you count the votes properly) and now Nobel Prize for Peace winner Al Gore... assuming there's no re-count

Card-i-cature a week... Week 40 - Lewis Hamilton (the Nine of Diamonds)

Week 40 - In this week, British Formula One racing prodigy was under investigation for allegedly causing an accident deliberately at the Japanese Grand Prix last week. He was subsequently cleared of any blame.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 39 - Aung San Suu Kyi (the Seven of Spades)

Week 39, and this week I've chosen Nobel prize winner, democracy campaigner, and (technically at least) president of Burma, who made a rare public appearance to support the protesting monks from her home where she has been under house arrest by the military junta.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 38 - Menzies Campbell (the 2 of Hearts)

Week 38, and with the political conference season getting into swing, I present Lib Dem leader Menzies Campbell, who posed this week for a rather ill-advised photo of him pointing down a toilet...

Card-i-cature a week... Week 37 - Brendan Barber (the Five of Hearts)

A slightly delayed week 37, and as it was the week of the TUC Conference I give you General Secretary Brendan Barber, who failed in his attempt to put pressure on keynote speaker Gordon Brown to raise pay for public sector workers.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 36 - Luciano Pavarotti (the King of Diamonds)

And now for week 36, and operatic tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, famous for his signature piece, Nessun Dorma which was used by the BBC for their coverage of the Italian World Cup in 1990, died this week from kidney failure at the age of 71.

Card-i-cature a week.. Week 34 - Angela Merkel (the Queen of Spades)

Apologies once more for the second brief hiatus recently. Anyway, retrospectively back again with this card for the week ending 24 August - German chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in Britain this week partly for a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and partly to attend the England v Germany game at Wembley Stadium (England lost...)

Card-i-cature a week... Week 33 - Amy Winehouse (the Four of Diamonds)

Week 33, and the turn of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, who pulled out of a few gigs this week due to taking time out to address 'health issues', amidst rumours of alcohol, cocaine and heroin abuse and a return to rehab.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 32 - Thabo Mbeki (the Five of Spades)

This week it's South African President Thabo Mbeki, who this week shocked AIDS/HIV campaigners across the world by sacking his Deputy Health Minister, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. Madala-Routledge was responsible for the large-scale roll-out of antiretrovirals across South Africa, a scheme opposed by both Mbeki and her superior, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who favoured, amongst other things the use of the beetroot as a cure for AIDS. More here.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 31 - Chris Langham (the Six of Diamonds)

...and bringing us right up to date we have the 6 of diamonds with disgraced comic actor Chris Langham, star of TV's 'The Thick of It' and former writer for the Muppet Show, who this week was convicted of child porn offences, which he had been downloading for 'research' for a character.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 30 - JK Rowling (the Queen of Clubs)

No court cards for clubs, then two in a row, with multi-millionaire author JK Rowling appearing as the Queen of Clubs for the week ending 28th July. In this week the last Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows* was released, along with the release of the latest film in the franchise Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

*and no, I haven't read it. Nor do I intend to...**

**no, really. I read the first one, and wasn't terribly impressed.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 29 - Alastair Campbell

...and for the week ending 21st July we have Alastair Campbell, former Spin-Doctor-in-Chief, who published his diary from the Blair years this week.

(and yes, I probably should have put this under Hearts as he is somewhat of a political figure. My deck, my rules...)

Card-i-cature a week... Week 28 - Jacqui Smith

Well, I've been a bit remiss in posting cards recently, so here's a four week catch-up, starting with week ending 14th July and newly appointed Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who revealed this week she had smoked cannabis as a student at university.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 27 - Alan Johnston (the 2 of Clubs)

Week 27... and this week is the good news that kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston was released from captivity by the Army of Islam group after 114 days. During his time as a hostage he was shown on video wearing a suicide bombers vest.

Hi Joanne,

Great! Glad you like the cards!

Unfortunately, I've been a bit lax in updating the card-i-catures recently, as I've had a busy run. This week, however, I'll be aiming to bring the series right up-to-date... keep watching!

Card-i-cature a week... Week 26 - Harriet Harman (the Queen of Hearts)

Halfway there, and only my first Queen. Although Harriet Harman is apparently Queen of Labour party members' Hearts, having being elected Deputy Leader of the Labour party this week, her reward from new Prime Minister Gordon Brown was not Deputy PM, but, er, Leader of the House of Commons (with Minister for Women thrown into the bargain).
