Welcome to the website of Alex Hughes Cartoons and Caricatures. I'm a cartoonist and caricaturist from Birmingham in the UK. Scattered across these pages are examples of my work, published and unpublished, from political cartoons to personal caricatures, comic strips to magazine illustrations. Card-i-cature a week... Weeks 48-52 (and the Joker)

Well, looks like I've come to the end of my project, so here, in reverse order, are the last 6 cards...

The Joker - George W Bush (and Dick Cheney)
Well, although I couldn't find a specific week-on-week story to tie Dubya to, he's cast his shadow over the whole year with the on-going wars on Terror, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The King of Spades - Jacob Zuma - 28 December
South African Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, was appointed President of the African National Congress, effectively ensuring him as a shoe-in for the Presidency next year, despite the on-gooing controversies in his personal life, from financial irregularities to his recently acquitted rape trial, where he admitted that his defence against AIDS was, er, to have a shower afterwards.

The Ace of Diamonds - Shane MacGowan - 21 December
Former Pogues frontman and raging alcoholic Shane MacGowan was back in the news this week with the re-issue of 'best Christmas song ever' Fairytale of New York (with the late Kirsty McColl) was censored by BBC Radio One, removing the words faggot and slut.

The Jack of Diamonds - Fabio Capello - 14 December
Newly-appointed England manager Fabio Capello makes the card this week, having promised to learn English within the month.

Queen of Diamonds - Chrisopher Biggins - 7 December
King of the Jungle is my Queen of Diamonds, having won TV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here with it's Bush Tucker Trials which invariably involved eating unpleasant animal parts.

The King of Clubs - David Abrahams - 30 November
Apparently publicity-shy businessman David Abrahams was trust into the limelight this week when it was revealed he was making substantial donations to the Labour party through intermediaries, conveniently side-stepping party-funding regulations and bringing the sleaze spotlight onto Labour party fundraising.

Card-i-cature a week.. Week 34 - Angela Merkel (the Queen of Spades)

Apologies once more for the second brief hiatus recently. Anyway, retrospectively back again with this card for the week ending 24 August - German chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in Britain this week partly for a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and partly to attend the England v Germany game at Wembley Stadium (England lost...)

Card-i-cature a week... Week 30 - JK Rowling (the Queen of Clubs)

No court cards for clubs, then two in a row, with multi-millionaire author JK Rowling appearing as the Queen of Clubs for the week ending 28th July. In this week the last Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows* was released, along with the release of the latest film in the franchise Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

*and no, I haven't read it. Nor do I intend to...**

**no, really. I read the first one, and wasn't terribly impressed.

Card-i-cature a week... Week 26 - Harriet Harman (the Queen of Hearts)

Halfway there, and only my first Queen. Although Harriet Harman is apparently Queen of Labour party members' Hearts, having being elected Deputy Leader of the Labour party this week, her reward from new Prime Minister Gordon Brown was not Deputy PM, but, er, Leader of the House of Commons (with Minister for Women thrown into the bargain).
