Welcome to the website of Alex Hughes Cartoons and Caricatures. I'm a cartoonist and caricaturist from Birmingham in the UK. Scattered across these pages are examples of my work, published and unpublished, from political cartoons to personal caricatures, comic strips to magazine illustrations. Please feel free to have a good look around. My services are available for personal caricatures, on-the-spot caricature or any other cartoon, caricature or illustation work, and many of the cartoons on the site are available for sale. On this page I'll keep you up to date with news and developments, and elsewhere in this section there's a site map, the all-important frequently asked questions list, and a page of useful links. If you're interested, or you'd just like to comment on the site, please get in touch here or e-mail me direct at alex.hughes@alexhughescartoons.co.uk. Card-i-cature a week... Weeks 48-52 (and the Joker) Well, looks like I've come to the end of my project, so here, in reverse order, are the last 6 cards... The Joker - George W Bush (and Dick Cheney) Well, although I couldn't find a specific week-on-week story to tie Dubya to, he's cast his shadow over the whole year with the on-going wars on Terror, Afghanistan and Iraq. ![]() The King of Spades - Jacob Zuma - 28 December South African Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, was appointed President of the African National Congress, effectively ensuring him as a shoe-in for the Presidency next year, despite the on-gooing controversies in his personal life, from financial irregularities to his recently acquitted rape trial, where he admitted that his defence against AIDS was, er, to have a shower afterwards. ![]() The Ace of Diamonds - Shane MacGowan - 21 December Former Pogues frontman and raging alcoholic Shane MacGowan was back in the news this week with the re-issue of 'best Christmas song ever' Fairytale of New York (with the late Kirsty McColl) was censored by BBC Radio One, removing the words faggot and slut. ![]() The Jack of Diamonds - Fabio Capello - 14 December Newly-appointed England manager Fabio Capello makes the card this week, having promised to learn English within the month. ![]() Queen of Diamonds - Chrisopher Biggins - 7 December King of the Jungle is my Queen of Diamonds, having won TV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here with it's Bush Tucker Trials which invariably involved eating unpleasant animal parts. ![]() The King of Clubs - David Abrahams - 30 November Apparently publicity-shy businessman David Abrahams was trust into the limelight this week when it was revealed he was making substantial donations to the Labour party through intermediaries, conveniently side-stepping party-funding regulations and bringing the sleaze spotlight onto Labour party fundraising. ![]() Labels: ace, cards, christopher biggins, clubs, david abrahams, diamonds, dick cheney, fabio capello, george w bush, jack, jacob zuma, king, queen, shane macgowan, spades Posted at 7:26 PM | Comments (0): Post a Comment Links to this post: Friday, November 09, 2007 Card-i-cature a week... Week 45 - General Pervez Musharraf (the Eight of Spades) ![]() Week 45 - and General Pervez Musharraf, who siezed power in a military coup in Pakistan in 1999, but yet is still an ally in the War on Terror, was in the news this week for declaring emergency rule in Pakistan, imposing a State of Emergency, suspending the Constitution, firing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, postponing next years presidential elections and putting rival and former president Benazir Bhutto under house arrest. Edit (27 Dec 2007): Small change as I realised I'd included two Ace of Spades, and no Eight. Remedied now. Week 43 - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (The Two of Spades) ![]() Week 43, and for the Two of Spades it's King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who this week was preparing to visit the UK for the first visit of a Saudi monarch in 20 years. The visit was contraversial for a number of reasons, from Saudi Arabia's disregard for human rights and use of capital punishment, the recent (conveniently dropped) enquiry into British Aerospace's and the Government's dealing with the country, and the King's comments on the 7/7 London bombers. Week 41 - Al Gore (The Four of Spades) ![]() Week 41 - and this week it's former US Vice President and technically-president (if you count the votes properly) and now Nobel Prize for Peace winner Al Gore... assuming there's no re-count Labels: al gore, cards, four, spades Posted at 7:06 PM | Comments (0): Post a Comment Links to this post: Friday, October 05, 2007 Card-i-cature a week... Week 39 - Aung San Suu Kyi (the Seven of Spades) ![]() Week 39, and this week I've chosen Nobel prize winner, democracy campaigner, and (technically at least) president of Burma, who made a rare public appearance to support the protesting monks from her home where she has been under house arrest by the military junta. Week 34 - Angela Merkel (the Queen of Spades) ![]() Apologies once more for the second brief hiatus recently. Anyway, retrospectively back again with this card for the week ending 24 August - German chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in Britain this week partly for a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and partly to attend the England v Germany game at Wembley Stadium (England lost...) Week 32 - Thabo Mbeki (the Five of Spades) ![]() This week it's South African President Thabo Mbeki, who this week shocked AIDS/HIV campaigners across the world by sacking his Deputy Health Minister, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. Madala-Routledge was responsible for the large-scale roll-out of antiretrovirals across South Africa, a scheme opposed by both Mbeki and her superior, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who favoured, amongst other things the use of the beetroot as a cure for AIDS. Week 23 - Vladimir Putin (the Ace of Spades) ![]() Getting in a day early for a change (as I'm off on my hols tomorrow), here's Bush-baiting Russiam Premier Vladimir Putin, who this week announced that Russian nukes were again being targeted at European targets in response to the USA's anti-missle system. Sounds like there'll be a chilly, Cold War-esque atmosphere at this week's G8. Week 20 - Nicolas Sarkozy (the Jack of Spades) ![]() This week it's the turn of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose election last week prompted riots on the streets of Paris. Ok, I know that was last week, but I make the rules... Saddam Hussein (the 10 of Spades) And now I launch my new project for this year... I intend to draw a caricature of a personality in the news every week for the next 52 weeks. The twist being, they're going to be in the style of playing cards, the plan being that there'll be a full deck at the end of the year (OK, minus the jokers, but I might fit them in along the way). So, to get the ball rolling, here's the first - the late Saddam Hussain, as the 10 of Spades: ![]() Oh, and in case you're wondering, the plan is to theme the suits, so Hearts will be British Politics, Spades World Affairs, Diamonds Entertainment and Clubs everything else... Edit: Blogger is playing up a bit, and for some inexplicable reason won't upload my image. I'll try again tomorrow... watch this space! Edit: All fixed now...
